Ištikimasis Johanas
faithful Johan

Gyveno kitados toks senas karalius.
Once upon a time an old king lived.

Susirgo jis kartą ir pagalvojo:
He once became sick and thought:

„Matyt, nebekelsiu jau daugiau iš šio patalo.“
"It seems I will nolonger get up from this bed any more"

Ir tarė: - Pakvieskit man ištikimąjį Johaną.
And he said: Invite for me the faithful Johan.

Ištikimasis Johanas buvo jo mylimiausias tarnas
The faithful Johan was his most favorite servant

ir vadinosi taip dėl to, kad visą gyvenimą ištikimai jam tarnavo.
and he is called such because all his life he has faithfully served him.

Kai jis atėjo prie karaliaus lovos, karalius jam tarė:
When he came to the king's bed, the king said to him:

- Ištikimasis Johanai, jaučiu, kad jau artinasi man paskutinioji,
Faithful Johan, I feel that my last time  is already approaching me,

bet dėl savęs aš per daug nesuku galvos, rūpi man tik sūnus,
but concerning me I am not too concerned, I only worry about my son,

jis dar jaunas, ne visada susivokia,
he is still young, he does not always comprehend everything,

kas ir kaip, ir jeigu tu neprižadėsi visur kur jam patarti
what and how, and if you will not promise me to advise him in everything

ir būti jo globėjas, aš negalėsiu ramiai akių užmerkti.
and to be his guardian, I will not be able peacefully to close my eyes.

- Aš jo neapleisiu ir ištikimai jam tarnausiu,
I wiil not desert him and I will faithfully serve him,

net jeigu tektų dėl to ir galvą padėti.
even if I have to give my life.

Tada senasis karalius tarė:
Then the old king said:

- Jeigu taip, tai galiu ramiai numirti.
If so, I can peacefully die.

- Ir paprašė: - Po mano mirties aprodyk jam rūmus
And he asked: after my death show him around the palace

- visus kambarius, sales ir rūsius su visais ten sudėtais turtais.
- all the rooms, the halls and cellars with all the assembled fortunes.

Nerodyk tik paskutinio kambario ilgajame koridoriuje,
Do not show only the last room in the long hallway

kur paslėptas karalaitės iš Aukso Stogo paveikslas.
where is hidden the princess' painting from The Gold Roof.

Jeigu jis pamatys karalaitės atvaizdą, ją taip karštai pamils,
If he will see the princess' portrait, he will fall madly in love with her,

jog kris žemėn apalpęs ir pateks per ją į didelius pavojus.
he will fall down unconscious and he will  be put through her into a great danger.

Tad sergėk jį nuo šito.
So guard her from this.
Ir kai ištikimasis Johanas dar kartą senajam karaliui prižadėjo
And when the faithful Johan again promised the old king 

vykdyti visus jo priesakus, karalius nutilo,
to implement all his mandates, the king became silent,

padėjo galvą ant pagalvės ir mirė.
put his head on a pillow and died.

Kai senasis karalius atgulė į kapą,
When the old king lay in his grave,

ištikimasis Johanas pasipasakojo karalaičiui,
the faithful Johan told the prince,

ką prižadėjęs jo tėvui, kai tas gulėjo mirties patale, ir tarė:
what he had promised to his father when he lay dead in bed and said:

- Šito aš sąžiningai laikysiuos ir būsiu ištikimas tau,
This I honestly will keep and I will be faithful to you,

kaip buvau ištikimas tavo tėvui,
as I was faithful to your father,

net jeigu tektų dėl to ir galvą padėti.
even if it would fall to me to give my life.

Kai praėjo gedulo dienos, ištikimasis Johanas tarė karalaičiui:
When the mourning days passed, the faithful Johan said to the king:

- Na, metas apžiūrėti, ką esi iš tėvo paveldėjęs.
Oh, it is time to see what you have inherited from your father.

Eime, aprodysiu tau rūmus.
Let's go, I will show the palace to you.

Ir ėmė visur vedžioti, vaikščiojo aukštyn ir žemyn,
And he started to guide him everywhere, walking high and low,

aprodė visus turtus ir puošnius kambarius, neatidarė tik vieno, 
he showed all the fortunes and the ornate rooms, he did not open only one,

to, kur buvo pavojingasis paveikslas.
the one where was the most dangerous painting.

O tas paveikslas buvo taip padėtas, kad krito į akis,
And that painting was so placed that it fell into the eyes,

vos tik duris pravėrus, ir buvo taip meniškai nutapytas, jog atrodė,
as soon as the door opened and it was so artistically painted, that it appeared

kad tai ne paveikslas, o gyvas žmogus, ir nieko gražesnio
that it is not a painting but a live person, and nothing more beautiful

ir mielesnio nėra visame pasaulyje.
and sweeter exists in all the world.

Jaunasis karalius pastebėjo, kad ištikimasis Johanas
The young king noticed that the faithful Johan

vis praeina pro vienas duris, ir paklausė:
always bypasses one door and asked"

- Kodėl tu neatidarai man šitų durų?
Why do you not open this door for me?

- Ten yra toks vienas daiktas, - atsakė ištikimasis Johanas, 
There is one such thing, answered the faithul Johan,

- kuris tave gali išgąsdinti.
which can scare you.

Tačiau karalius tarė:
However the king said:

- Aš apžiūrėjau visus rūmus, noriu žinoti ir kas čia yra.
  I looked around the whole palace, I want to know what is here.

Priėjo ir jau buvo beplėšiąs duris, 
He came closer and was already opening the door

bet ištikimasis Johanas jį sulaikė ir tarė:
but the faithful Johan detained him and said:

insert-

Aš tavo tėvui prieš mirtį prižadėjau nieku gyvu tau nerodyti, 
I promised to your father before dying never to show to you,

kas yra tame kambaryje, nes tada ir tave, ir mane ištiktų didelė nelaimė.
what is in that room, because otherwise you and I would endure a big misfortune.

- O ne, - atsakė jaunasis karalius, 
Oh no, answered the young king, 

- jeigu ten neįeisiu, nebus jau man gyvenimo:
if I will not enter there, there will be no life for me:

dieną naktį neturėsiu ramybės, 
day and night I will have no peace, 

kol savo akimis nepamatysiu, kas ten yra.
until I will see with my own eyes what is there.

Nesitrauksiu iš vietos, kol neatidarysi durų.
I will not retreat from that place until you will open the door.

Suprato ištikimasis Johanas, kad nieko nebus, 
The faithful Johan understood, that it will not work,

ir, gailiai dūsaudamas, sunkia širdimi atrinko iš didžiulio ryšulio raktą, 
and tearfully sighing, with a heavy heart he selected a key from a large bundle 

atidarė duris ir pirmas įėjo į kambarį,
opened the door and went first into the room,

manydamas, kad užstos paveikslą, ir karalius jo nepamatys. 
thinking that he will obstruct the painting and the king will not see it.

Bet kur tau!
But far from it!

Karalius pasistiebė ant pirštų galų ir pažvelgė jam per petį. 
The king stood on his tiptoes and glanced over his shoulder.

Ir kai išvydo mergelės atvaizdą, tokį neapsakomai gražų, 
And when he saw the girl's image, so indescribably beautiful,

spindintį auksu ir brangakmeniais, iškart krito apalpęs ant žemės. 
shining with gold and gemstones, at once he fell unconscious onto the ground.

Ištikimasis Johanas pakėlė jį, 
The faithful Johan lifted him up,

nunešė į lovą ir didžiai susirūpinęs pagalvojo: 
took him to a bed and greatly worried, thought:

„Štai ir atsitiko nelaimė! 
"Here a misfortune has happened.

Viešpatie, kas dabar bus?“ 
Lord, what will happen now?"

Paskui gaivino, girdė vynu, kol jaunasis karalius atsigavo. 
Next he refreshed, gave wine, until the younge king revived.

Ir pirmi jo ištarti žodžiai buvo:
And his first words that he said were:

- Ak, kieno tas gražus atvaizdas?
Ah, whose beautiful image is that?

- Tai karalaitė iš Aukso Stogo, - atsakė ištikimasis Johanas.
That is the princess from the Golden Roof, answered the faithful Johan.

O karalius kalbėjo toliau:
And the king continued to talk:

- Aš labai ją pamilau, mano meilė tokia begalinė, 
I have fallen in love with her, my love is so infinite,

kad jos apsakyti negalėtų ir visi medžių lapai, 
that i would not be able to describe it nor the tree leaves.

jeigu jie liežuvį turėtų. 
if they would have a tongue.

Gyvybės nepagailėsiu, bet vis tiek ji bus mano. 
I will not sacrifice my life, but she will be mine anyhow.

Tu, Johanai, esi man ištikimiausias, turi man padėti.
You, Johan, are the most faithful to me and you have to help me.

Ištikimasis Johanas ilgai suko galvą, ką čia reikėtų daryti, 
The faithful Johan ransacked his brain a long time, what would be necessary to do,
žžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžž 20230315 ===================
nes ne taip paprasta buvo vien karalaitės akyse pasirodyti. 
because it was not so simple just to appear in the princesses' eyes.

Galų gale sugalvojo ir tarė karaliui:
Finally he thought and said to the king:

- Visi karalaitės daiktai yra iš aukso: 
All the princess' things are golden:

stalai, kėdės, dubenys, taurės, puodeliai ir
tables, chairs, bowls, goblets, cups and

visi namų apyvokos reikmenys.

Tu savo iždinėje turi penkias statines aukso,
In  your treasury you have five barrels of gold,

duok vieną šalies auksakaliams 
give one to country's goldsmiths

ir tegu jie nukala visokiausių indų ir rykų,
and let them forge all kinds of dishes and ?

visokiausių paukščių, žvėrių ir įstabių gyvulėlių, 
of all kind of birds, beasts and unusual animals,

tai turėtų jai patikti.
that should please her.

Visa tai pasiėmę, mes nuvyksim pas ją ir išbandysim laimę.
He took it all, we will travel to her and will test luck.

Karalius sukvietė visus auksakalius, 
The king summoned all the goldsmiths

ir jie dieną naktį dirbo, kol pridarė visų tų grožybių. 
and they worked day and night until they had made all those beauties.

Kai viskas buvo sukrauta į laivą, 
When all was piled into the ship,

ištikimasis Johanas persirengė pirklio drabužiais, 
the faithful Johan changed into merchant clothes,

tą patį padarė ir karalius, kad niekas jo nepažintų. 
the king did the same, so noone would recognize him.

Tada jie išplaukė į jūrą. 
Then they set sail to the sea.

Ilgai ilgai plaukė, kol priplaukė miestą, 
For a long time they sailed, until they reached the city,

kuriame gyveno karalaitė iš Aukso Stogo. 
in which lived the princess from the Golden Roof.

Ištikimasis Johanas liepė karaliui pabūti laive ir palaukti, 
The faitful Johan told the king to stay on the ship and wait,

kol jis sugrįš.
until he returns.

- Galbūt, - sakė jis, - man pasiseks atsivesti čia karalaitę, 
Perhaps, he said, I will succeed to bring here the princess,

todėl žiūrėkit, kad visur būtų tvarka, liepkit išdėlioti aukso indus 
thus see that everywhere there would be order, command that all the gold dishes would be spread out 


ir išpuošti visą laivą.
and decorate the whole ship.

Paskui pasiėmė visokių aukso dirbinių, 
Next he took all kinds of gold items,

išlipo į krantą ir nudrožė tiesiai į karaliaus rūmus.

Įėjo į kiemą, žiūri 
He entered the yard, he looks around

- stovi prie šulinio graži mergaitė su dviem aukso kibirais rankose

ir semia vandenį.

Prisisėmusi apsisuko

ir jau buvo beeinanti su žėrinčio vandens kibirais,

bet pamatė nepažįstamą vyriškį ir paklausė, kas jis toks esąs.
but she saw an unknown  man and she asked who he is.

Esu pirklys, - atsakė ištikimasis Johanas ir parodė, ką turėjo atsinešęs.
I am a merchant - answered the faithful Johan and he showed what he had brought.

- Ai, ai, ai, kokie gražūs auksiniai daiktai! 
Ai, ai, ai,   what beautiful gold things.

- sušuko ji ir, pasistačiusi kibirus, ėmė apžiūrinėti vieną po kito. 
she said and standing on a bucket, she started to look at one after another.

Paskui tarė: - Reikia parodyti karalaitei, 
Next she said: I need to show to the princess,

ji taip mėgsta aukso dirbinius, kad nupirks juos visus.
she so much likes gold items that she will buy them all.

Paėmė ištikimąjį Johaną už rankos 
She took the faithful Johan by the hand

ir nuvedė pas karalaitę, mat buvo jos tarnaitė. 
and lead him to the princess, for she was her maid.

Pamačiusi prekes, karalaitė labai apsidžiaugė ir tarė:
having seen the goods, the princess was very delighted and said:

- Tai toks gražus darbas, kad aš perku iš tavęs viską.
These are such beautiful items that I am buying all from you.

Bet ištikimasis Johanas atsakė:
But the faithful Johan answered:

- Aš esu tik vieno turtingo prekijo tarnas. 
I am only one rich trader's servant.

Tai, ką čia atnešiau, tėra tik niekai, palyginti su tuo, 
Those that I brought here are only nothing, to compare with that,

ką mano ponas turi savo laive, ten gražiausi ir meniškiausi dalykai, 
which my master has in his ship, there are the most beautiful and most artistic things,

kokie kada buvo padaryti iš aukso.
which have ever been made from gold.

Karalaitė panoro, kad viskas būtų jai atgabenta į rūmus, 
The princess wished that all would be delivered to the palace,

bet ištikimasis Johanas tarė:
but the faithful Johan said:

- Tam prireiktų daug dienų - tokia gausybė ten yra visokio gero, 
That would require many days - such wealth there is of all kinds of goods,

o ir tiek salių jūsų rūmuose neatsirastų viskam sutalpinti.
and so many halls in your palace would not suffice to house everything.

Tai dar labiau pakurstė karalaitės smalsumą, ir ji pagaliau tarė:
That incited even more  the princess' curiosity, and she finally said:

- Gerai, vesk mane į laivą, aš pati ten nueisiu 
 Ok, lead me to the ship, I myself will go there

ir apžiūrėsiu tavo pono brangenybes.
and look over your master's expensive things.

Nuvedė ištikimasis Johanas karalaitę į laivą, labai patenkintas, 
The faithful Johan lead the princess to the ship, very satisfied,

kad taip gerai pasisekė, o karalius, vos ją išvydęs, suprato, 
that he had so well succeeded, and the king, just after seeing her, understood

kad gyva ji dar gražesnė negu paveiksle, 
that alive she was even more beautiful than in her painting,

ir rodėsi, kad iš susižavėjimo širdis jam krūtinėj susprogs. 
and it seemed that from admiration his heart in his chest would burst.

Karalaitė įžengė į laivą, ir karalius ją nulydėjo, 
The princess stepped into the ship and the king accompanied her,

o ištikimasis Johanas pasiliko pas vairininką 
but the faithful Johan stayed with the driver 

ir liepė jam plaukti nuo kranto.
and commanded him to sail from the shore.

- Iškelk visas bures, kad laivas skrietų kaip paukštis.
Raise all the sails so that the ship would fly like a bird.

Tuo metu karalius rodė laive karalaitei aukso dirbinius kiekvieną skyrium:
At that time the king showed in the ship to the princess each of the gold items separately:

dubenis, taures, puodelius, paukščius, žvėris ir įstabius gyvulėlius. 
bowls, goblets, cups, birds, beasts and unusual animals.

Daug valandų praėjo, kol ji viską apžiūrėjo, 
Many hours passed while she looked over everything

ir besigrožėdama nepastebėjo, 
and while admiring, she did not notice 

kad laivas jau seniai plaukia. 
that the ship had already long been sailing.

Apžiūrėjusi paskutinį daiktą, padėkojo pirkliui ir jau eis namo, 
After seeing the last item she thanked the merchant and is ready to go home,

bet kai priėjo prie laivo krašto, 
but when she went near the ship's edge,

žiūri - laivas jau atsidūręs jūros platybėse 
she sees - the ship has wound up in the seas' expanses

ir neria tolyn iškėlęs visas bures.
and is diving further, having raised all its sails.

- Ak, - sušuko ji išsigandusi, 
Ak, she shouted becoming afraid,
 
- aš apgauta, aš pagrobta, aš kažkokio pirklio naguos, 
I was deceived, I have been kidnapped, I am in some kind of merchant's claws

verčiau jau mirti negu šitaip!
I would rather die than this.

Tačiau karalius paėmė ją už rankos ir tarė:
However the king took her by the hand and said:

- Aš esu ne pirklys, o karalius, ir savo kilme ne prastesnis kaip tu, 
I am not a merchant, but a king, and with my pedigree, am not inferior to you,

o klasta tave pagrobiau tik dėl to, kad neapsakomai tave pamilau. 
but by guile I kidnapped you only because I desperately fell in love with you.

Kai pirmą kartą išvydau tavo atvaizdą, kritau apalpęs ant žemės.
When the first time I set eyes on your image, I fell having fainted on the ground

Išgirdusi tuos žodžius, karalaitė iš Aukso Stogo apsiramino, 
Having heard those words, the princess from the Golden Roof calmed down,

širdyje pajuto prielankumą ir mielai sutiko tapti jo žmona.
in her heart she felt benevolence and gladly agreed to become his wife.

Tačiau atsitiko, kad vieną dieną, kai jie buvo jau toli jūroje, 
However it happened, that one day, when they were already far out to sea,

o ištikimasis Johanas sėdėjo laivo priekyje ir grojo, 
and the faithful Johan sat at the ship's bow and played, 

pasirodė ore trys varnai. 
there appeared in the sky three crows.

Ištikimasis Johanas nustojo grojęs ir ėmė klausytis, 
The faithful Johan stopped playing and began to listen,

ką tie varnai tarp savęs šneka, 
what these crows were saying between themselves, 

nes gerai suprato jų kalbą. 
because he understood well their language

Vienas sušuko:
One said:
insert- 
žžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžžž20230322=====================
O, jis vežasi namo karalaitę iš Aukso Stogo.
Oh. he is taking home the princess from the Golden Roof.

- Taip, - atsakė antras, - bet ji dar ne jo. 
Yes, answered the second, but she is not yet his.

Trečias tarė:
The third said:

- Kaip ne jo, juk sėdi jo laive?
How is she not his, isn't she sitting in his ship?

Tada vėl prabilo pirmasis ir sušuko:
Then again the first one spoke and said:

- Na ir kas iš to! Kai jie priplauks krantą, 
  So what of it. When they sailed to the shore,

atbėgs jo pasitikti raudas žirgas.
his red steed will come running to meet.

Karalius panorės ant jo užsėsti, ir jeigu užsės, 
The king will wish to sit on him, and if he will sit,

žirgas su juo pakils į orą ir nulėks, 
the steed with him will rise into the air and will fly away,

ir karalius niekada nebepamatys savo sužadėtinės.
and the king never will nolonger see his fiancée.

Tarė antrasis:
The second said:

- Ir nėra kaip išsigelbėti?
And isn't there a way to save herself?

- Būti yra, jeigu kas nors kitas spėtų pirma užsėsti, 
There is, if someone else would sit on him first,
 
ištrauktų iš balnakrepšio ginklą ir nušautų tą žirgą, 
he would pull out of a saddle bag a weapon and he would shoot that steed,

tada karalius būtų išgelbėtas. 
then the king would be saved.

Bet kas tai žinos! 
But who would know that.

O jeigu kas žinotų ir jam pasakytų, 
And if someone would know and would say to him,

tas nuo kojų pirštų iki kelių pavirstų į akmenį.
that one from the toes to the knees would change into stone.

Tada tarė antrasis:
Then the second said:

- Aš žinau dar daugiau. 
  I know even more.

Jeigu žirgas ir būtų nušautas, tai nuotaka vis tiek dar neatitektų karaliui. 
If the steed would be shot, then the bride would still would not go to the king.

Kai jie drauge įžengtų į rūmus, 
When they together would step into the palace,

ten gulėtų ant padėklo vestuvių drabužis, 
there the wedding clothes would lie on a tray, 

pažiūrėti iš sidabro ir aukso išaustas, 
to look at, woven from silver and gold

o iš tikrųjų ten būtų tik siera ir derva. 
and in reality instead there would be only sulfur and resin.

Jeigu karalius jį apsivilktų, tas drabužis sudegintų jį su visais kauleliais.
If the king would put it on, that clothing would burn him with all his bones

Trečiasis tarė:
The third one said:

- Ir nėra kaip išsigelbėti?
  And is there no way to escape?

- Būti yra, - atsakė antrasis,
There is, answered the second one,

 - jeigu kas su pirštinėmis paimtų tą drabužį ir įmestų į ugnį, 
if someone with gloves on would take the clothing and would throw them into the fire,

tada jaunasis karalius būtų išgelbėtas. 
then the young king would be saved.

Bet kas iš to! 
But so what.

Jeigu kas tai žinos ir jam pasakys, 
If someone who would know said to him, 

tas nuo kelių iki širdies pavirs į akmenį.
that one from his knees to his heart would turn into stone.

Tada tarė trečiasis:
Then the third one said:

- Aš žinau dar daugiau. 
I know even more.

Jeigu vestuvių drabužis ir bus sudegintas, 
If the wedding clothes would be burned,

nuotaka vis tiek dar neatiteks karaliui. 
the bride still will not belong to the king.

Kai po jungtuvių karalienė išeis šokti, 
When after the wedding the princess will go to dance,

staiga ji bešokdama išbals ir lyg negyva kris žemėn. 
suddenly while dancing she will turn pale will fall down as if dead.

Ir jeigu niekas jos nepakels,
And if no one will pick her up,

neiščiulps iš dešinės krūties trijų lašų kraujo 
will not suck out from the right breast three drops of blood 

ir tuojau pat jų neišspjaus, karalienė numirs. 
and would not immediately squeeze it out, the princess will die.

Bet jeigu kas tai žinos ir pasakys, 
But if some one who knows and will reveal it,

tas nuo viršugalvio ligi kojų pirštų pavirs į akmenį.
that one from the top of his head to the toes will turn to stone.

Šitaip pasišnekėję, varnai nuskrido tolyn, 
While talking thus, the crows flew away,

bet ištikimasis Johanas viską suprato ir nuo to laiko pasidarė tylus 
but the faithful Johan understood everything and from that time he became quiet

ir liūdnas: juk jei nutylės savo ponui, ką girdėjo,
and sad: after all, if he is silent to his master, what he heard,

užtrauks jam nelaimę, jei pasakys - pragaišins savo gyvybę. 
would  incur on hime misfortune, if he will reveal - his life would disappear.

Galų gale tarė sau:
Eventually he said to himself:

- Gelbėsiu savo poną, nors ir pats per tai pražūsiu.
I will save my master, although I myself will perish.

Ir kai priplaukė jie krantą, atsitiko taip, kaip pranašavo varnai: 
And when they sailed to the shore, it happended like they had predicted to the crow:

iš kur buvęs, kur nebuvęs prilėkė gražus raudas žirgas.
from some where a beautiful red steed appeared.

- Puiku, - tarė karalius, - jis nuneš mane į rūmus. 
Excellent, said the king, he will carry me to the palace.

Ir jau buvo besėdąs, bet ištikimasis Johanas užbėgo jam už akių, 
And while he was sitting down, the faithful Johan ran from his sight

strykt užšoko ant raudžio, ištraukė iš balnakrepšio ginklą ir nušovė žirgą. 
pop he jumped on Red, he pulled from a saddle bag a weapon and killed the steed.

Kiti karaliaus tarnai, tie, 
Some of the king's servants, those, 

kur nemėgo ištikimojo Johano, pagavo šaukti:
who did not like the faithful Johan, started to shout:

insert- 

Kokia gėda, nušauti tokį gražų gyvulį, 
What a shame, to kill such a beautiful animal, 

juo karalius būtų parjojęs į rūmus!
the king would have ridden it to the palace.

Bet karalius tarė:
But the king said:

- Tylėkit ir nelieskit jo, tai mano ištikimiausias Johanas, 
  Be quiet and do not touch him, that is my faithful Johan,

ką gali žinoti, gal tai tik į gera!
What do you know, perhaps it is just for the best.

Paskui jie įėjo į rūmus, o ten, salėje, rado padėklą, 
Next they entered the palace, and there in the hall, they found the tray,

ant jo gulėjo vestuvių drabužis, ir iš tikrųjų atrodė, 
on it lay the wedding clothes, and indeed, it appeared,

lyg jis būtų iš sidabro ir aukso.

Jaunasis karalius priėjo ir jau buvo jį beimąs, 
The young king approached and already, while he was taking them,

bet ištikimasis Johanas nustūmė valdovą į šalį,
the faithful Johan  pushed the leader aside,

stvėrė drabužį su pirštinėmis, 
seized the clothes with gloves, 

greitai nunešė į ugnį ir sudegino. 
quickly carried them away to the fire and burned them.

Kiti tarnai vėl ėmė murmėti:
Other servants again started to mutter:

- Žiūrėkit, jis sudegino net karaliaus vestuvių drabužį.
Look, he burned even the king's wedding clothes.

Bet jaunasis karalius tarė:
But the young king said:

- Ką gali žinoti, gal tai tik į gera, 
Who can know, perhaps it is only for the best,

nelieskit jo, tai mano ištikimiausias Johanas.
Do not touch him, that is my most faithul Johan.

Ir buvo iškeltos vestuvės, prasidėjo šokiai, išėjo šokti ir jaunoji. 
And the wedding began, the dancing started  and the bride also started to dance.

Ištikimasis Johanas įdėmiai žiūri, akių nuo jos veido nenuleidžia. 
The faithful Johan intently watches, his eyes do not lower themselves from her face.

Staiga mato - jaunoji išbalo ir lyg negyva krito žemėn. 
Suddenly he sees - the bride turns pale and, as if dead, falls down.

Jis greit prišoko, pakėlė ją nuo žemės, nunešė į kambarį, 
He quickly jumped near, lifted her from the ground, carried her into a room, 

paguldė, priklaupęs iščiulpė iš dešinės krūties tris lašus kraujo 
layed her down, knelt, sucked out from her right breast three drops of blood

ir tuoj pat išspjovė. 
and immediately spat them out.

Jaunoji bemat vėl ėmė alsuoti ir atsigavo, 
The bride immediately again started to breathe and to recover,

tačiau jaunasis karalius visa tai matė ir negalėdamas suprasti, 
however the young king saw all of this and, not able to understand

kodėl ištikimasis Johanas šitaip padarė, didžiai supyko ir sušuko:
why the faithful Johan acted like this, became enraged and shouted:

- Įmeskit jį į kalėjimą!
Throw him into the jail.

Kitą rytą ištikimasis Johanas buvo nuteistas ir nuvestas į kartuves.
The next morning the faithful Johan was convicted and lead to the gallows.

Ir kai jau stovėjo ant pakylos ir tuoj tuoj turėjo būti pakartas, jis prabilo:
When he stood on the platform and immediately was to be hung, he spoke:

- Kiekvienas nuteistasis turi teisę prieš mirtį tarti paskutinį žodį. 
Each convict has the right before his death to say his last words.

Gal ir aš galiu pasinaudoti šia teise?
Perhaps even I can take advantage of this right?

- Taip, - atsakė karalius, - kalbėk, aš tau leidžiu. 
Yes, answered the king, speak, I permit you.

Ir ištikimasis Johanas pasakė:
And the faithful Johan said:

- Aš nuteistas nekaltai, aš visą laiką buvau tau ištikimas.
I was convicted innocently, I was all the time faithful to you.

Ir apsakė, kaip, plaukdamas per jūrą, 
And he said, while sailing across the sea,

nugirdo varnų pokalbį ir kaip paskui visa tai darė, 
he had heard a crows' conversation and then he did all that,

norėdamas savo poną išgelbėti.
wanting it rescue his master.

- O, mano ištikimasis Johanai, atleisk man, atleisk! 
Oh, my faithful Johan, forgive me, forgive me.

Išveskit jį iš kartuvių!
Lead him away from the gallows.

Tačiau ištikimasis Johanas, vos tik ištaręs paskutinius žodžius, 
However the faithful Johan, had barely said his last words, 

krito žemėn negyvas ir pavirto į akmenį. 
fell down dead and turned into stone.

Karalius ir karalienė labai dėl to nuliūdo, ir karalius tarė:
The king and queen became very sad because of this, and the king said:

- Kaip aš galėjau už tokią didelę ištikimybę taip negražiai atsilyginti.
How could  I reward such great loyalty in such an ugly way.

Ir liepė akmeninę statulą pakelti 
And he commanded the stone statue to be placed

ir pastatyti jo miegamajam kambary šalia lovos. 
in his bedroom next to his bed.

Kiekvieną kartą, pažvelgęs į ją, jis pravirkdavo ir sakydavo:
Every time, looking at it, he began crying and said:

- O, kad aš galėčiau tave atgaivinti, mano ištikimiausias Johanai!
Oh that I would be able to resurrect you, my faithful Johan.

Praėjo kiek laiko, ir karalienė pagimdė dvynukus, du berniukus. 
Some time passed and the queen bore twins, two boys.

Jie gražiai augo ir buvo tikras tėvų džiaugsmas. 
They grew beautifully and were the parents' true happiness.

Vieną kartą, kai karalienė buvo bažnyčioje, 
Once time, when the queen was at church 

o vaikai sėdėjo su tėvu ir žaidė, 
and the children were sitting with the father and were playing,

karalius vėl su didžiu liūdesiu pažvelgė į akmeninę statulą, 
the king again with great sadness looked at the stone statue,

atsiduso ir sušuko:
sighed and exclaimed:

O, kad aš galėčiau tave atgaivinti, mano ištikimiausias Johanai!
Oh that I would be able to resurrect you, my faithful Johan.

Staiga akmuo prabilo ir sako:
Suddenly the stone started to speak and said:

- Taip, tu galėtum mane atgaivinti, 
Yes, you could resurrect me,

jeigu sutiktum paaukoti tai, kas tau brangiausia.
if you would agree to sacrifice that what is dearest to you.

Ir karalius sušuko:
And the king exclaimed:

- Atiduočiau dėl tavęs viską, ką tik turiu pasaulyje.
I would sacrifice everything for you, whatever I have in the world.

Tada akmuo tarė:
Then the stone said:

- Jei tu savo ranka nukirstum abiem vaikams galvas 
If you with your own hand would cut off both childs'  heads

ir pateptum mane jų krauju, tada aš vėl atgyčiau.
and you would annoit me with their blood, then I could again revive.

Karalius išsigando išgirdęs, 
The king became afraid upon hearing that,

kad turi pats savo mieliausius vaikus žudyti,
he had to kill his beloved childs himself,

bet prisiminęs, kad ištikimasis Johanas dėl jo paaukojo savo gyvybę, 
but remembering that the faithful Johan had sacrificed his life for him,

išsitraukė kalaviją ir savo ranka nukirto vaikams galvas. 
pulled out a sword and with his own hand cut off the childs' heads.

Ir kai patepė jų krauju akmenį, tas iškart atgijo, 
And when he annointed the stone with their blood, it immediately came alive,

ir prieš jį stojosi ištikimasis Johanas, vėl gyvas ir sveikas. 
and before him stood the faithful Johan, alive and healthy again.

Ir tarė jis karaliui:
And he said to the king:

- Tavo ištikimybė neturi likti be atlygio!
Your loyalty does not have to remain without a reward.

Paėmė vaikų galvas, užkėlė ant pečių 
He took the childs' heads, placed them up to their shoulders 

ir patepė žaizdas jų krauju, 
and annointed the  wounds with their blood,

ir vaikai bemat atgijo, ėmė šokinėti ir žaisti, 
and the childs immediately came alive, started to dance and play,

lyg nieko nebūtų atsitikę.
as if nothing had happened.

Karalius nežinojo nė kaip džiaugtis, 
The king did not know how to rejoice

o pamatęs pareinant karalienę, 
and having seen the queen coming,

paslėpė ištikimąjį Johaną ir abu vaikus didelėje spintoje. 
he hid the faithful Johan and both childs in a big closet.

Kai karalienė įėjo, jis paklausė:
When the queen entered, he asked:

- Ar meldeisi bažnyčioje?
Did you pray in the church?

- Taip, - atsakė ji, - bet visą laiką galvojau apie ištikimąjį Johaną, 
Yes, she answered, but all the time I thought about the faithful Johan,

kad taip nelaimingai per mus jis pražuvo.
that he perished so unfortunately for us.

Tada karalius tarė:
Then the king said:

- Mieloji žmonele, mes galėtume grąžinti jam gyvybę, 
Dear wife, we would be able to bring back life to him,

bet turėtume dėl to paaukoti abu sūnelius.
but we would have to sacrifice both of our sons.

Karalienė išbalo, apmirė iš baimės, bet tarė:
The queen blanched, was struck with fear, but said:

- Mes turim tai padaryti, atsilygindami už jo didelę ištikimybę.
We have to do that, by rewarding him for his great fidelity.

Karalius apsidžiaugė, kad ir ji mano taip, 
The king was happy that she thought like that,

kaip jisai, priėjęs atidarė spintos duris,
as he did, approaching he opened the closet door,

išleido vaikus ir ištikimąjį Johaną ir tarė:
he released the childs and the faitful Johan and said:

- Garbė Dievui, jis jau išgelbėtas, o mūsų sūneliai vėl su mumis!
Praise God, he is already saved, and our sons are again with us.

Ir apsakė jai, kaip viskas buvo. 
And he told her how everything had gone.

Nuo to laiko visi jie drauge laimingai gyveno iki pat savo amžiaus galo.
Since that time they all lived happily together to the end of their time.
